I’ve now been breastfeeding for 10 weeks. By combining one-to-one support and the app, I’m confident of reaching my goal of giving my daughter breastmilk exclusively up to 6 months old, through breastfeeding and some expressed milk.

I’m a Nurse Practitioner on a neonatal intensive care unit so I knew lots about breastfeeding before having my daughter, and I’ve supported a lot of women with breastfeeding. But theory and practice are so different! I had great support from midwives early on, but it was the fine detail of the latch that turned out to be so important.

The breastfeeding specialist recommended the app when she visited me. In the app I worked on the latch on my own, endlessly watching the video of the avatar baby’s mouth, trying to get my daughter to do the same thing. I also used the advice I was given during one-to-one support, and my daughter’s weight slowly started to creep up.

The app gave me reassurance that what I was doing was right. Without this dual support I might have lost confidence and given up breastfeeding altogether.

The community and psychological support of the app has probably been the most useful aspect for me. Most of the mums I know are formula feeding and there seems to be a big difference between our sleep patterns. It’s the nights that I find especially hard and that’s where Anya by LatchAid really helps. I know I can turn to the community for help and there’s always someone up who’s been through something similar and willing to reply quickly. It’s nice to know your baby isn’t broken! The virtual support has also been helpful for instant answers. And the lactation consultants are in the background to jump on if needed. I’ve had so much useful 1:1 advice from them.

The app has been the best type of support for me. I live in a rural area so my closest support is miles away.

I went into breastfeeding with an open mind. I don’t think it would have upset me if I’d had to use formula, but I didn’t like the sound of bottles and sterilising. Breastfeeding suited us as a family. I was aiming for 3 months initially but we’re at 7 months now and I think I’ll carry on until 12 months.

The LatchAid 3D animations have been useful. A doctor recently recommended trying a different position as I had a blocked duct and I could just go back to the app to look it up. When you’re so used to feeding in the same position you forget other ones you could try.

I’m going back to work soon so I’ll be looking up the webinar on returning to work and I’m sure I’ll be asking lots of questions. I’m so glad I persevered with breastfeeding and the app has really helped that. I’m such a fan that I tell every new mum-to-be I meet about the app!

I found it useful for loads of different reasons. The Anya AI function was so helpful, just in the middle of the night, which is usual as a mother when you have the most free time to kind of ping in my questions, what I’d call the 3am worries! Am I doing it right? Is the baby getting enough milk? Are the nappies wet enough? Should I be pumping more? How much is enough, those sorts of things that, at that time in the night. You can’t reach out to other people, you might not have that support. So it was just great having instant feedback from Anya, and knowing that it was evidence based, so it’s high quality, factual information.
